The little village of San Nicolò
in Val d’Ultimo, South Tyrol
Our Waltershof theme hotel is located in San Nicolò, near Merano, in Val d’Ultimo, in one of the most traditional, original and lake-filled valleys in South Tyrol and is nestled between rustic farms, lush green meadows and thick forests. So many well-known figures, such as Thomas Mann, Franz Kafka, Austrian empress Sissi, Peter Rossegger and Otto von Bismarck have all turned to the healing powers of the Val d’Ultimo countryside and sought relaxation and inspiration in San Nicolò.
The village of San Nicolò (1,256m above sea level) lies away from the main street on the sunny slopes, meaning it’s quite easily the most charming and most beautiful area in the valley. The little Gothic church with its thin steeple, first documented in 1338 AD, stands majestically in the middle of San Nicolò. The Thurnerhof, the remains of an old fortified tower with mysterious stone images on the wall, greets us from the steep hill. With original flair, the three Schwienbacher farms begin right next to the Waltershof.
Opposite, you’ll find the Val d’Ultimo valley museum, a true treasure trove of Val d’Ultimo cultural history, containing and preserving agricultural artefacts and local art. From here, a road leads up to the hamlet of Grubberg, with countless sun-kissed farms, usually two buildings constructed in a wooden style typical to Val d’Ultimo, and on to San Maurizio (1,640m).
